Triathlon Wetsuit Comparison

Triathlon Wetsuit Comparison thumbnail
A wetsuit can keep you warm in an open water swim

If the swim portion of your triathlon is in open water you may want a wetsuit to avoid getting chilled. Shopping for a wetsuit is like shopping for other athletic gear where you will weigh cost against performance.

  1. Function

    • The wetsuit is typically made of neoprene and serves to hold in heat if you are swimming in cold bodies of water. Staying warm is vital to be ready for the cycling portion of the triathlon.

    Types

    • The basic wetsuit is called a "shortie" and will cover your torso and upper legs. The next degree of coverage will extend the leggings to mid-calf and the next will go to the ankles. A full wetsuit will cover your arms and legs.

    Features

    • Wetsuits will have a zipper up the back and zippers at the ankles and wrists if your wetsuit extends that far to make it easier to put on. Wetsuits come in different thicknesses depending on how cold of water you plan to swim in. There are numerous brands to choose from.

    Considerations

    • Wetsuits need to be removed before the bike portion to avoid overheating and this will increase your transition time adding to your overall race time. Shorties are the quickest to take off. Sleeveless wetsuits allow for better range of motion in your shoulder.

    Pricing

    • Wetsuits range in price from $150 to more than $700 (as of August 2010). You will get what you pay for in terms of durability and quality. You may want to consider a used wetsuit to save money on a better brand.
