Colgate has been making toothpaste for more than 130 years.

Colgate first introduced toothpaste in jars in 1873. In 1896 it introduced the first toothpaste in a collapsible tube. As of 2010, the company makes 33 different types of toothpaste.

Types

Colgate makes toothpastes for tooth whitening, plaque prevention, gingivitis prevention, tartar control, sensitivity relief, long-lasting fresh breath, and special formulas for children. The company also has a toothpaste and mouthwash mixture combined in one paste.

Ingredients

Ingredients for Colgate toothpastes come from different places around the world. All Colgate toothpastes marketed in the US--with the exception of Colgate Max Fresh with Mouthwash Beads--are made without any animal-derived ingredients. Glycerin comes from synthetic or vegetable sources. For information about other ingredients, the company suggests calling them directly.
