A codec is a software format for audio or video files. Each codec will have different levels of quality, compress the files to different sizes, and be playable on different multimedia players. AVI Codec

The AVI codec was developed by Microsoft using Microsoft's RIFF specifications. It is a common video file format that allows for the maintenance of higher-quality standard-definition video. AVI, however, does not have a strong capability to compress files and maintain resolution. Thus, many high-quality AVI files are also large files.
Xvid Codec

Xvid is a continuously developed, open source software codec. Like the AVI format, Xvid is capable of maintaining high-resolution standard-definition video files. However, much of the Xvid project has been dedicated to creating a file compression system that allows the codec to maintain quality while reducing file size. For this reason, Xvid files can be smaller than AVI files without sacrificing a large amount of resolution.

Converting AVI to Xvid

To convert AVI to Xvid, a computer must first be able to play both types of files, which requires having both codecs installed. You can download these from the project homepages (see Resources). Once both codecs are installed, any number of commercial or free file conversion programs can perform the conversion (see Resources). Simply add the AVI file to the conversion software, select "Xvid" as the output type, and begin the conversion process.
