Aztec Homes Information

The Aztec civilization was highly advanced with a comprehensive language and developed technology. Their homes are like most homes today--largely influenced by climate, culture and function.

Material

Most Aztec homes were made of adobe, which is sun dried brick made from adobe clay. The floors were made of earth, while the walls were constructed out of stone, or more often mud brick on stone foundations.

Design and Function

Aztec homes mostly consisted of one room in a rectangular hut with a low open doorway and no chimneys or windows. Main areas of Aztec homes were split up into four areas: a sleeping area for the family, a place for a shrine for the gods, a section where meals were prepared and a place for eating.

Commoners Versus Nobles

There were slight variations in how commoners' homes were built compared to the nobles. They had similar layouts, but nobles' homes would be made of better materials such as lime or stone. They were also bigger--sometimes two stories tall--and were decorated more lavishly. While commoners had very little, nobles would have large gardens and perhaps a pool nearby.
