When Do Hair Follicles Mature?

When Do Hair Follicles Mature? thumbnail
The hair-growth cycle has three stages.

The hair-growth cycle has three phases--the anagen, catagen and telogen stages-- that can take up to six years to complete. Although genetics plays a role in the hair-growth cycle, Dr. Nilofer Farjo, a follicular surgery expert, states on the Belgravia Centre website that smoking, a poor diet and pollution are three factors that can affect the speed of follicle maturation and the hair-growth cycle. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Time Frame

    • The hair follicle and its dermal papilla reach maturation during the last phase of the anagen (growing) stage. The length of the anagen stage will vary for each hair follicle, but it typically lasts from two to six years, according to the Hair Information website.

    Causes

    • The follicle matures during the anagen stage, as it uses the body's nutrients to synthesize DNA and RNA to make the hair fiber grow. Once the hair has reached its maximum girth and length, the follicle has fully matured and enters the catagen phase. The hair follicle begins to break down during the catagen phase, which lasts about two weeks, as it prepares for the final telogen phase, when the hair is shed.

    Significance

    • If the hair follicles are affected adversely during the anagen phase, the hair will grow for a shorter time and result in thinner, weaker hair. This process ultimately leads to balding and hair loss. Factors that can affect the anagen growth stage include disease, stress, medication and exposure to radiation.
