What Is an Occlusion Device?

Occlusion devices are used in medicine to close blood vessels during surgery. This devices are important because they allow surgeons to complete surgical procedures without worrying that their patient will bleed out.

  1. Identification

    • Occlusion devices look like long tubes with rings on the end designed to block the blood vessel. There are various types of occlusion devices but each is designed to complete a similar goal.

    Types

    • Occlusion devices are designed to be used only on a temporary basis, like during surgery. They are also designed to be gentle on the blood vessel, blocking it without causing any permanent trauma.

    Effects

    • Some occlusion devices are fitted with balloons to increase and decrease the pressure of the device. These balloons are controlled externally by the surgeon with a syringe and stock cock.
