Columbia is the third most populated country in Latin America. Its flag represents a republic which gained independence from Spain in 1810. This Spanish-speaking country lies on the northwest coast of South America, nestled between Venezuela and Ecuador.

  1. The Flag

    • The Colombian flag is composed of yellow, blue and red horizontal stripes. The yellow strip is half of the flags width, while the blue and red strips have a quarter each. It was adopted in 1861. It hasno officially recorded meaning but there are two accepted theories on the significance of the flag's design.

    Sovereignty and Justice

    • The first theory says yellow is the color of sovereignty and justice. The blue of the flag is nobility, loyalty and vigilance and red represents bravery, honor and victory. The proportion of each color on the flag represents the percentage that each makes of the national characteristic.

    Liberty

    • The second theory suggests yellow stands for universal liberty. Blue represents equality for all in the eyes of both the law and God, regardless of class or race. Red stands for brotherhood among all of Columbia's citizens.

    Children's Song

    • A popular Colombian children's song says that yellow stands for the gold resources of the country, blue represents the ocean border and red stands for the blood of the men who died for independence.
