A flexible organization structure is one in which workers can easily adapt to their customers' needs, efficiently complete their work and expedite decision-making when necessary. Several types of internal organizational structures are flexible enough to meet these objectives.

  1. Flat Organizational Structure

    • Smaller companies with fewer than 20 employees typically have a flat organizational structure, which is the most flexible type of organizational structure. Flat structures typically have few levels of management; accordingly, they foster team spirit and encourage greater communication between workers, according to LearnManagement2.com.

    Geographical Structure

    • Larger organizational structures may need to frame their organizations by geographic region to remain flexible. Companies use a geographical or decentralized structure if customers' buying habits vary in different regions. For example, a consumer food manufacturer may use a geographical structure because consumer tastes vary dramatically by region.

    Ad Hoc Teams

    • Sometimes a company will create an ad hoc team to handle a temporary project. The director or manager who initiates the team idea will usually spearhead the efforts. This organizational structure is purely based on job grade level. Ad hoc teams are flexible because they enable companies to handle special projects quickly and then dissolve the team after the work is completed.
