The first exam required for MCDST certification is Supporting Users and Troubleshooting a Windows XP Operating System. The second is titled Supporting Users and Troubleshooting Desktop Applications on a Windows XP Operating System. Both exams must be taken, but they may be taken in any order.

Microsoft has no prerequisites for people wanting to take these certification examinations, but it does strongly recommend having experience in the field. Microsoft provides exam preparation guides on its website describing skills to be tested. You can also take a practice test from a certified provider.
-

Register for examinations on the Microsoft website (see Resources). Most examinations cost $125 as of 2010 but are subject to change, according to Microsoft. Visit the websites of the examination providers for up-to-date information on pricing (see Resources).

After studying for a few weeks, people with previous experience should be ready to take the examination and become certified. The MCDST certification from Microsoft does not expire. It can also be upgraded to other certification levels through additional examinations.
