Chinese Family Law
In 1980, the National People's Congress passed the Marriage Law of the People's Republic of China, defined as "a basic code governing marriage and family relations." Since then, several revisions have addressed the rights of women and the elderly, family planning, marriage registration and divorce.

Marriage

According to SOAS Research Online, marriages are legally accomplished through registration. Article 2 of the legislation states that matrimony is structured on the free choice of both partners, monogamy and gender equality. Article 30 asserts the right of parents to remarry over the objections of their children.
Divorce

Revisions in family law support a relaxation in the grounds for contested divorce. Changes made in 2001 allow the party without fault to seek compensation for the dissolution of the marriage. Grounds for compensation include domestic violence, extramarital cohabitation and desertion.

Family Planning

In 2001, the government mandated that a married couple may, under most circumstances, only have one child. It also stipulated that family-planning efforts should be supplemented by the enhancement of educational and employment opportunities for women.
Family Relations

All Chinese parents have a duty to raise, educate and discipline their children. Parents and children each have the right to inherit the property of other family members.
