The Size of Carry-On Bags

Most airlines allow only one carry-on bag per passenger, in addition to one personal item (such as a purse, backpack or computer case), and any smaller approved carry-on items such as jackets, umbrellas and duty-free merchandise. Check with your airline for exact specifications to avoid any delays or extra charges at the airport.

Dimensions

Carry-on bags must not exceed 45 linear inches in combined width, length and height. However, items within these limits may still be rejected if they are unable to fit in the overhead compartments.

Weight

Weight limits for carry-on baggage generally range from 13 pounds (Aer Lingus, Virgin Atlantic) to 22 pounds (RyanAir, Air Canada). Some airlines, such as EasyJet and British Airways, do not specify a weight limit as long as passengers are capable of lifting and transporting their luggage without aid.

Other Requirements

Most airlines require that carry-on items fit into the Carry-on Baggage Check at the gate, even if these items are within all weight and size requirements. Short connecting flights also impose additional restrictions if baggage space is limited. Always check with your airline for any requirements specific to your itinerary.
