Do I Need a Swap File With 4GB of RAM for Ubuntu?

If your PC has 4GB of RAM, you do not need to add a swap file because Ubuntu provides sufficient virtual memory in a swap partition. However, you can add a swap file should you ever need it.

  1. Virtual Memory

    • When your Ubuntu PC runs memory-intensive processes, such as while you are using multiple photo or video applications, your PC might detect that it needs more memory than it currently has available in RAM. At these times, your PC invokes virtual memory by temporarily transferring inactive memory pages to a swap space--called a swap partition--on the hard disk.

    Installed Swap Space

    • When you install Ubuntu, it creates a swap space that reserves part of the hard disk for your virtual memory. For example, if you install Ubuntu 10.4, it creates a swap partition that is typically 1.5 times as large as the RAM memory in your PC.

    Adding a Swap File

    • You can add a swap file to your Ubuntu PC if its swap space becomes insufficient. For more information, go to the Ubuntu Sharing website (see Resources).
