The Specifications for a Sunbeam Tiger

The Specifications for a Sunbeam Tiger thumbnail
The Sunbeam Tiger was inspired by the AC Shelby Cobra sports car.

Approximately 7,000 Sunbeam Tigers were built by the British company Jensen of West Bromwich, England from 1964 to 1967. A red Tiger was driven by Maxwell Smart in the TV show "Get Smart." The 1964 Tigers cost $3,499.

  1. Prototypes

    • American racing legends Carroll Shelby and Ken Miles built the original two prototype cars in the tradition of bolting powerful, heavy American V8 engines into lightweight European cars. Using Sunbeam Alpines, they decided the Ford Falcon 260 cubic inch Ford Windsor V8 with a two-speed automatic transmission would fit between the chassis frame rails.

    Engine

    • The Mark I Sunbeam Tigers had a 260.1 cubic inch V8 engine. It produced 164 horsepower at 4,400 rpm and had 258 foot pounds of torque at 2,200 rpm, with a bore of 3.8 inches and a stroke of 2.87 inches. The cars had a top speed of 118 mph with a quarter-mile time of 16 seconds flat.

    Chassis

    • The 1964 Tigers were 156 inches long, 60.5 inches wide and 51.5 inches tall, with a wheelbase of 86 inches and a curb weight of 2,564 pounds. They had a four-speed manual transmission, rack and pinion steering with front disc and rear drum brakes.
