Symbolism of Gravestone Images

Symbolism of Gravestone Images thumbnail
The images used on gravestones have important symbolic meanings.

A short walk around any cemetery, particularly one with older graves in it, will reveal a vast array of images. Each of these images has an important symbolic meaning.

  1. Plants

    • Plant images are often used on gravestones. Oak leaves can have a number of meanings, including endurance, strength and liberty, while the branch of an olive tree can symbolize peace.

    Animals and Birds

    • A number of different animals appear on gravestones. Lambs suggest the idea of innocence and can be used on children's graves. Doves are a popular choice for gravestones and symbolize purity and peace. Often they are shown holding an olive branch, a reference to the Biblical story of Noah and the Ark.

    Human Hands

    • Many older gravestones use images of hands as part of their design. A hand pointing downwards can suggest the presence of God, while a hand pointing upwards usually indicates that the soul of the deceased person has risen to Heaven.

    Mortality Symbols

    • Older gravestones also use symbols emphasizing human mortality. A broken column means a young life cut short, while the skull reminds us that there is no escape from death.
