Body Fungus in Fish

Avoid infections in your fish by changing tank water frequently.

Freshwater fish are frequently affected by a variety of different diseases. Some infections are caused by parasites, while the growth of bacteria or fungus is responsible for other diseases. Fungal infections usually have obvious symptoms.

Types

Ichthyophthirius, ich or white spot is a common fungal infection in fish. The fins and body become covered in white spots that look like grains of salt, according to Fish Lore website. Saprolegnia, also known as fish fungus or cotton wool fungus, is another common infection. Grayish-white or white cottony growths appear on the fish's body.

Causes

Fungal infections are usually caused by poor water quality. Fish may also become ill because they became stressed during transport, according to Fish Lore. Sometimes other diseases or injuries to the skin lead to secondary fungal infections.

Prevention/Solution

Treat ich by increasing the temperature of the tank to speed up the parasite's life cycle. Medications are available at most pet stores. Treat fish fungus by performing a 50 percent water change before adding medicines such as Maracyn or Rid Fungus. These conditions are prevented by monitoring the water quality and by quarantining new fish for two or three weeks to watch for health problems.
