Should Bumpers Be Used in Baby Cribs?
There are many safety issues to be concerned with when putting together a baby's room. A crib bumper seems to be safe, as it protects a baby from the rails of the crib, but there are other factors to consider when choosing to use a bumper.

Identification
-
A bumper is a a protective covering that goes across the rails of the crib. Most bumpers are part of matching crib sets that also include crib sheets and a quilt or comforter. Although they can be quite decorative, choosing a safe one is essential.
Safety
-
Kids Health advises that bumpers should have at least 8-10 ties at the top and bottom. These are the safest choice because they are firm and more likely to stay in place. The American Academy of Pedatrics explains that thick, pillow-like bumpers should not be used in cribs because they have been associated with Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.

Removal
-
A bumper should be removed from the crib when a child can stand, says the American Academy of Pediatrics. Removing the bumper prevents the child from trying to use it as a step to climb out of the crib.
