What Are the Weaknesses of Public Security Cameras?
Security cameras raise controversy as well as provide security. While security cameras provide police and military another method to apprehend criminals, the use of security cameras is far from perfect for several reasons. Weaknesses are inherent in the system.
-
Privacy
-
Privacy is an important issue, especially for countries claiming individual liberty. Privacy issues often keep government agencies from installing and using security cameras in districts where the people refuse to vote to allow them. A big weakness of security cameras is that they record the innocent as well as the guilty, further eroding individual right to privacy.
Electricity
-
Security cameras cannot operate without being connected to the electrical grid. Power brownouts or blackouts, even with backup systems, may seriously limit the use of security cameras at a time when they may be needed most.
-
Areas Not Covered
-
Security cameras are expensive. Governments already stressed financially may not fund a tight enough grid of security cameras. With gaps in coverage, tracking a suspected suspect can be difficult at best. The scarcity of security camera coverage provides suspects unmonitored areas, allowing them escape routes.
Over-reliance
-
When security cameras are installed in homes or businesses and on the street, there may be a tendency for police to rely over-much on their ability to find and track suspects with the grid of security cameras. Citizens may feel security cameras provide security and not keep up their own guard while going to work or shopping.
