Development of Paranasal Sinus in Babies

The paranasal sinuses are air-filled spaces in the bones of the skull and the face. For convenience, these air-filled spaces are referred to collectively as our sinuses, when in fact there are four separate paranasal sinuses. These are the maxillary, frontal, ethmoid and sphenoid paranasal sinuses.

  1. Development

      The development of the paranasal sinuses begins prenatally. The ethmoid and maxillary sinuses are present at birth. These two sinuses are located in the upper portion of the face. The maxillary sinus is the largest of the sinuses, and is located under the eyes. Between the nose and the eyes is the ethmoid sinus.

    Frontal and Sphenoid Sinuses

    • The frontal sinus does not begin developing until the second year of life. This sinus is located in the forehead, and in some people never develops. The sphenoid sinus, which is located by the pituitary gland, does not begin development until the third year of life.

    Purpose

    • The paranasal sinuses reduced the weight of the skull.

      Paranasal sinuses serve to decrease the overall weight of the skull. They also provide resonance for the voice. Air turnover is relatively slow in the skull, and the paranasal sinuses serve to humidify and heat the inhaled air.
