Homemade Muzzle Brake

The intent of a muzzle brake is to reduce felt recoil while shooting. Homemade units should be designed and manufactured with this sole purpose in mind.

  1. Diversion

    • The primary function of a muzzle brake is to divert gasses emitted upon discharging a firearm or air gun. As the projectile moves down the barrel and out the muzzle, gasses are displaced and create muzzle movement.

    Design

    • Designers differ on how best to achieve the same effects. Some choose to project blast rearward while others prefer to send the blast to the sides. Angles of the ports should be tuned to the specific gun being fitted.

    Mounting

    • Muzzle brakes can be screw-fitted or pinned. In some cases the barrel itself is cut, but this permanently disfigures the firearm. If you want to be able to easily remove or replace your brake, threading the end of the barrel is the most efficient method. Check all applicable federal and state laws regarding the particular firearm you intend to modify with a muzzle brake.
