How Much Do Foster Parents Get Paid in Massachusetts?
Not every child in the United States has the benefit of a stable home environment. Child welfare workers sometimes find it necessary to place a child with foster parents. In Massachusetts, there are several types of reimbursement that foster parents receive.

Foster Parent Requirements
-
In order to take children into your home and receive stipends for their care, you must first become a licensed foster parent in Massachusetts. The general requirements include passing background, health and reference checks, and a physical standards check for your home. You must also undergo a training program and home visits with a social worker.
Foster Care Maintenance Payments
-
The Massachusetts Department of Children and Families provides foster families with a monthly stipend to help with meeting the daily expenses of children in your care. The amount of the Foster Care Maintenance Payment is based upon the child's age. For instance, as of September 2007, foster parents caring for a 2 year old receive $556 per month, while those with a 16 year old receive $659.

Other Expenses
-
In addition to monthly maintenance stipends, payments are made for certain other expenses as well. For example, each foster child receives a quarterly clothing allowance, also according to the child's age. Bonus payments are issued for each child's birthday and during the holidays. All foster children are covered through MassHealth, so the state covers medical and dental care.
