Navigation Software for Laptops

Navigation Software for Laptops thumbnail
Laptop navigation software acts just like car-mounted GPS units.

Navigation software for laptops consists of software applications that use an external or internal GPS device and your laptop to provide turn-by-turn directions throughout the United States and other countries.

  1. Visual Display

    • Laptop navigation software displays maps and route information directly on the monitor of the laptop. The visual display normally includes a detailed map information such as street names and geographical information, maneuver guidance and turn-by-turn text information. The appearance of the visual display will vary from product to product, but most features are identical.

    Routing

    • Laptop navigation software features similar routing technologies as car-mounted GPS units. These units include automatic rerouting, detour options, speed alerts, traffic alerts and voice-guided turn-by-turn directions. Routing options may also include a multipoint itinerary, parked car locator and safety features, such as school zones and driver fatigue warnings. You can easily upgrade laptop navigation software route maps by visiting manufacturers' websites.

    GPS Receiver

    • An external GPS receiver, or sensor, provides directions. This sensor normally connects to the laptop through the USB port or through wireless Bluetooth connectivity. You can either secure the GPS receiver onto the dashboard of the vehicle or, for wireless models, attach it on the outside of the vehicle for better satellite connectivity.

    Cost

    • The cost of laptop navigation software relates directly to the type of features and the software bundle---specifically, whether or not it includes a GPS receiver. Older versions of the software may be more cost-effective, although the mapping data may be out of date. As of 2010, navigation software for laptops carries an average price ranging from $60 for software only to more than $300 for an advanced-level software bundle.
