According to the University of Missouri, you should answer the phone with a proper greeting by identifying yourself. According to Ohio State University, one way to do this would be to say hello, and state your name and what department you work in. For example, the greeting may sound something like, "Hello, this is Jane from advertising."

Don't eat food or taking a sip of a drink when answering the phone as the caller may have a hard time hearing what you are saying. Instead, wait to eat or drink until after the phone call has ended.

Always ask the caller if he can be placed on hold before doing it because the caller may not have time to wait for you to find out the answer to his question or transfer the call. He may prefer to call back.
