Definition
-
Biometric authentication technology is a means of verifying human identity based upon certain traits. Biometrics is the biological identification of an individual.
Types
-
Biometric authentication can be based on either behavioral or physiological characteristics. Physiological traits relate to the shape of the body, and can include fingerprints, a palm print or face recognition. Behavioral authentication is based on the behavior of a person, and can include handwriting and voice recognition.
-
Process
-
During an enrollment, or when an individual uses a biometric system the first time, biometric information is collected from an individual and stored, often on a template such as a card or database, for future verification purposes. In subsequent use, the newly produced biometric template is compared to the template produced during the enrollment using an algorithm, or mathematical computation designed to compare similarities. If the saved template and new template are declared a match, the individual is authenticated and granted access to secure information.
