Auto insurance policies come in all shapes and sizes, and can usually be tailored to fit your insurance needs. Your age, driving record, state and car condition are all important factors in what insurance coverage would be typical for your situation.

  1. Liability

    • Liability insurance coverage takes care of any damage you cause to another person's vehicle in an accident where you are considered to be at fault. However, it does not cover any damage done to your own vehicle. Liability insurance is often considered typical for older cars that have diminished significantly in value.

    Collision

    • Collision insurance covers any damage caused to your vehicle, regardless of whose fault the accident was. In order to avoid high insurance premiums, many drivers purchase collision insurance with some type of deductible. If you are still making payments on a car, the company you purchased the car from will likely require that you have some type of collision insurance.

    Comprehensive

    • Comprehensive insurance covers any type of damage to your vehicle, including car accidents, car theft, vandalism, hail damage and other accidents. Many people who own high-class or luxury cars purchase comprehensive insurance.

    Other Options

    • Many insurance companies offer additional insurance options, such as uninsured motorists insurance, bumper-to-bumper insurance and roadside assistance.
