How do I Become an Exterminator in Texas?
Pest control is a noble profession that offers financial stability and benefits. In the state of Texas, individuals hoping to enter the exterminator profession must make a substantial time commitment.
-
Become an Apprentice
-
Fill out an Apprentice Registration and Technical License form, available on the Texas Department of Agriculture website, within 10 days of employment at a pest control center, or 10 days of beginning to perform pest control services. Submit your application online, along with a $65 application fee, as of 2010. If you indicate an arrest on your application, the Structural Pest Control Service (SPCS) may conduct a criminal background check. After application review, SPCS will issue an apprentice card valid for 12 months from your hiring date.
Complete Training
-
Complete the training requirements. In Texas, the requirements include 20 hours of classroom training in pest control standards, eight hours of classroom training in each of the pest control categories for which you require licensing and 40 hours of applied, on-the-job training in each of the pest control categories for which you require licensing. A certified exterminator must supervise your on-the-job training, with a minimum of three days contact per week.
-
Take the Exam
-
Prepare for your licensing exam. Fill out an application for a Certified Applicator Exam and License, available on the Texas Department of Agriculture website. Submit your application online, along with a $50 fee (as of 2010) for each category exam. You must submit your application before the 12-month apprentice card expires. You will receive your technician license and become a professional exterminator upon passing the exam.
