Claim earned income credit on your tax return.

If you have deductions, it is important to know how many of those deductions you can claim for your income tax earned income credit (EIC). Knowing the tax laws benefits people with and without children, as both can claim EIC.

  1. Purpose

    • The EIC was designed to give those who work at a low wage, an opportunity to claim an additional tax credit. This additional tax credit can often result in more money on your paycheck throughout the year or a refund at the end of the year. The credit especially benefits those with children.

    Qualifications

    • To file for the EIC tax credit, you must have a social security number, earned income such as from a job or self employment. You can file without having children as dependents, but you cannot be a dependent on someone else's taxes. Additionally, you must be deemed a U.S. citizen or resident alien.

    Misconceptions

    • Many fail to realize the EIC credit is different from other tax credits you get for having children. You can have several children as dependents and claim other child tax credits, however you can only claim up to three children for EIC under 2009 tax laws.
