A Balanced Diet for an Athlete
Athletes exert copious amounts of energy on a regular basis. Expending large amounts of energy requires the athlete to maintain a healthy, balanced diet. In order to achieve optimal performance standards, athletes must maintain proper eating habits.
-
Protein
-
As training increases in intensity, the athlete will have a need for additional protein. Protein provides both strength and energy for the athlete. A lack of protein will leave the athlete feeling weak, and his performance will suffer.
Carbohydrates
-
Carbohydrates provide the main source of energy for athletes. Athletes gain the greatest benefit from stored carbohydrates in the body. Complex carbohydrates can be found in pastas and grain products. Simple carbohydrates are found in fruits, sugar and dairy products. Both types of carbohydrates provide a vital energy source for the athlete.

Water
-
Without water, an athlete cannot function properly. This simple, but vital, nutrient may easily be overlooked. However, athletes must remain hydrated both while training and at rest to ensure a healthy lifestyle.
