The image-based graphical interchange format file (GIF) creates images with up to 256 colors. Editing and text capability makes this image format a choice for web graphics. The echo command function is a programming tool used for displaying HTML parameters and messages.

Turning on command-echoing by typing "echo on" while writing source code turns on the command prompt for accessing data. Turning off command-echoing by typing "echo off" hides lines of code and the echo command prompt. Large GIF animations use many lines of programming code. Lengthy code is easy to become lost in so echoing a line makes it disappear until turning command-echoing back on.
