Magnification: Fixed Vs. Zoom

A zoom lens had the ability to shift between different magnifications.

It is a constant debate among photographers: whether to use a zoom lens or a fixed focal length lens. A fixed, or prime, lens offers a single magnification while a zoom lens has the ability to alter the camera's magnification. In terms of magnification, a number of factors can be taken into considering when deciding which type of lens to use.

Length

The obvious is the focal length of the lens. A fixed lens offers only one focal length, while a zoom lens offers a range of focal lengths. A particular focal length, such as 100mm, determines the magnification of the lens. If you know what you're shooting beforehand, a fixed lens may be beneficial. If you do not, a zoom lens may be more useful. This way, you will be able to adjust the magnification depending on the target.

Quality

Although with the advancement in technology and the inception of high-end zoom lenses, fixed lenses are often thought to produce an image of a higher quality. In a zoom lens, the involved machinery allowing the apparatus to adjust between different magnifications often creates a distorted image by not wholly focusing the lens.

Convenience

Many photographers find the zoom lens to be a more convenient method in regards to magnification. If you own a fixed lens camera and intend on shooting in different magnifications, you will need to carry an assortment of different lenses to switch out when you so choose. Since a zoom lens is able to shift between different magnifications, you won't need to carry the extra weight of a dozen other lenses.
