California Bounty Hunter Training
California is one of the only states that requires special licensing and specific training to become a bounty hunter. This requires more effort than in other states, because California actively promotes teaching the safest bounty hunting techniques.
-
Requirements
-
California bounty-hunting training courses can be done on-line or at select, approved schools that focus on criminal justice. You must be 18 or older to apply. The first step is to take a 12-hour course that covers prelicensing bail education. After this, you are required to apply for your bounty-hunting license and score 70 percent or higher on the test.
Contract Negotiation
-
After you pass the bounty-hunting test, you negotiate a bounty-hunting contract that allows you to legally pursue any fugitives in California who have skipped bail.
-
Licensing
-
After you receive your license and become an active bounty hunter, the California Department of Insurance asks that you take six hours of continuing education classes each year.
Considerations
-
California bounty hunters are required by law to notify the police at least sex hours before they begin the pursuit of each new fugitive case. They are also required to carry copies of their documentation and their bounty-hunting license with them during pursuits. Bounty hunters are not allowed to wear a uniform or in any way dress to make others believe they are part of a California police force.
