Job Performance Preview Vs. Review

A performance review is the process in which a manager reviews employee performance based on past experiences. A performance preview, on the other hand, focuses more on the employee's needs by allowing him to communicate what he needs to be successful with his manager.

  1. Functions

    • The performance review was developed to rate an employee based on a specific goal system or matrix. The preview method is a fairly new concept that gives more accountability to the manager when it comes to an employee's performance. Both activities focus on an employee's development and productivity.

    Benefits

    • A performance review allows the manager to review data that clearly state how the employee is performing and the areas where he needs to improve. The performance preview helps to build a strong relationship between the manager and the employee by requiring regular communication that focuses on the employee's needs.

    Considerations

    • Each of these processes has its limitations. An organization must utilize the method that better fits its specific needs and objectives. Consider the size, locations and culture of the company before settling on one method or the other.
