The History of Husqvarna Sewing Machines

The History of Husqvarna Sewing Machines thumbnail
The mechanical sewing machine was a major invention of the 19th century.

The first sewing machines for home use had already been in production for 20 years when, in 1872, Husqvarna, a Swedish arms factory, decided to diversify into the manufacture of sewing machines.

  1. The Husqvarna Company

    • The Husqvarna company originally produced muskets for military use. From a forge operation producing weapons manually, the factory evolved into a high-precision industrial operation. With a reduction in orders for weapons in the late 19th century, Husqvarna added sewing machines to its product line.

    In the United States

    • It was not until 1949 that the company entered the United States market, under the brand name Viking. The company is now identified as Husqvarna Viking.

    Significant Models

    • While the first Husqvarna entry into the sewing machine market was a model called the Northern Star, the company's Freja model was introduced in 1883 and manufactured until 1925. Important innovations included a 1903 model with an oscillating bobbin and the 1972 Centennial series, the first lubrication-free sewing machine. In 1979, the model 6680 utilized a micro-computer.
