Estate Planning Software for a Mac
Estate planning includes wills, trusts and a variety of financial concerns. Since most lawyers use PCs, estate planning software is designed for the PC environment. There are ways to make PC estate planning software run on a Mac.
-
Typical Estate Software
-
Estate planning software includes a checklist of issues that should be addressed by the decedent and financial projections based on various distributions. It can also include a calculation of the taxes that will have to be paid. Local, state and federal bar associations provide guidance on selecting software. Magazines and consultants provide guidance also. The reader should distinguish between software that is designed for non-lawyers and software designed for professionals.
PC Compatibility
-
Some software is Mac compatible. Only a review of the system requirements will provide certainty. For non-compatible software there are solutions which lead the Mac to think it's running a PC. According to Nolo, which designs software for lawyers, their Windows version of "Living Will Maker" can be made accessible by running a program called "Boot Camp" which allows the Mac to think it's running a PC. Boot Camp requires a reboot of the Mac. Another program, called Parallels (by Parallels, Inc.), allows a PC to think it's running a PC without rebooting.
