How to Learn to Speak Modern Greek

Learning to speak even a bit of Greek will make any trip to Greece or Cyprus much more enjoyable.

The best way to learn modern Greek is to travel to Greece or Cyprus and learn while immersed in the language. If travel is not a possibility, there are other good options for learning foreign languages.

Study Abroad

Learning to speak Greek in Greece gives you the opportunity to practice what you learn as you go about your daily life and allows you to hear native speakers on a constant basis. There are many schools throughout Greece that offer programs for study abroad. (See Resources.)

Self-Teaching

Programs have been developed to help you teach yourself a foreign language. The Pimsleur language program is based on audio tracks you listen to, while Rosetta Stone sells software that has you match pictures, written words and spoken words to learn Greek. (See Resources.)

Online Courses

If these professional programs are too expensive, there are online options that are less expensive, and in many cases free. They typically have the same elements as their more expensive cousins, including audio and text samples to help you understand. (See Resources for links.)
