Definition of Global Information Grid

The Global Information Grid, or GIG, supports the U.S. Department of Defense, the National Security Agency and other government agencies, by transporting information through a global communications network. It is the newest technological advancement against the war on terror.

  1. Definition

    • The GIG operates by globally storing, processing, managing and transporting information through a network that transports information from one government agency to another, according to the National Security Agency website. The grid has top-of-the-line security components to make sure the information transported stays secure. Troops stationed at bases, camps and mobile sites can communicate with one another via this system.

    Goal

    • The goal of the GIG is to optimize the processing, storage, management and transport of information between government agencies and military personnel. Above all, the main objective is to provide the National Command Authority with a means of communicating with all troops and officers as quickly and efficiently as possible.

    Characteristics

    • The GIG has the ability to allow troops to reach stations on a global level. The grid is Internet-like, creating optimum information transport. Users can access the GIG from anywhere and reach anyone. The system categorizes and labels data transported through it for easy accessibility.
