What Is the First Law of Thermal Dynamics?

The First Law of Thermodynamics is also called the Law of Conservation of Energy. It is one of the universe's absolute physical laws and states that energy and matter cannot be created or destroyed.

  1. The First Law and the Universe

    • There are three laws of thermodynamics. Much like a system of checks and balances, the latter two laws depend on the first law and on each other. Subsequently, the first law applies to everything in the universe.

    Constant Energy

    • The first law states that energy can be changed, moved, transferred or manipulated in any way, but not created or destroyed. This means that all the energy in the universe is constant. It's always been and will always be there.

    • No one has ever found any evidence that contradicts or refutes any of the three laws. Furthermore, Einstein's famous equation, E = mc2, supports the first law by equating mass and energy and suggesting that all energy and matter in the universe is constant.
