Can You Fax From DSL?
A fax machine can interact with a DSL line in one of two ways. It can use a line filter and run over the analog telephone circuit, ignoring the DSL line entirely, or it can be hooked up to a VoIP (voice over Internet protocol) interface.

Line Filters
-
Because a DSL line operates at a different frequency than the analog circuit, it may introduce line noise that interferes with analog voice and data traffic. To counteract this, a line filter must be placed between any analog devices and the telephone line. This filter removes any signal noise generated by the DSL connection, and allows analog devices to operate as if the DSL line didn't exist. Using this method, faxing becomes very simple, operating exactly as on a normal telephone line.
Voice over IP
-
Another method to use---especially if your DSL line is not bundled with analog service---is to connect a fax machine to one of the analog ports on a VoIP phone adapter. Check with your VoIP provider first; many of these services do not support faxing. Those that do usually charge an extra fee for the use of a fax machine.

E-mail to Fax Services
-
Many companies provide services that allow users to send an e-mail to a special e-mail address. This special address converts the e-mail to a fax signal and sends it to the specified number. These services usually charge a small fee per fax or a monthly fee. There are free alternatives, but they usually are limited in some way, such as number of pages in a single fax or number of faxes sent in a single day.
