Hazmat Response First Responder Training

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) requires employers to take steps to prevent injuries or illnesses caused by the release of toxic substances. OSHA uses Federal Regulations Title 29 CFR Parts 1910.120 and 1926.65 to provide guidance and list requirements for emergency first responder training.

  1. Emergency Response Plan

    • All employers with hazardous materials on the worksite and personnel with emergency response duties must create an emergency response plan. All employees must receive training to understand the hazards present, evacuation routes and response procedures.

    Training Levels

    • Specific training for emergency responders depends on their responsibilities. Personnel may be responsible for areas such as spill notification, evacuation, leak stoppage, clean up and incident command and should receive training in their area of specialty. Training ranges from overall knowledge of the emergency response plan to specific scientific knowledge of the hazardous materials and expert knowledge of equipment repair.

    Post-Emergency Response Operations

    • Post-emergency response operations focus on clean-up efforts after the incident. Personnel with post-emergency duties receive training on the use of personal protective equipment, clean-up procedures and final determination of completion.
