Phases of a Cell Cycle

Phases of a Cell Cycle thumbnail
The cell cycle culminates in cell division.

The cell cycle is a cycle of growth, DNA synthesis, further growth and cell division by which cells reproduce themselves. Cell division can be further broken into four individual stages.

  1. G1 Interphase

    • During the G1 interphase, each small daughter cell from the previous cell division spends this phase growing and acquiring energy necessary for the next phase of the cell cycle.

    S Phase

    • The S phase, or synthesis phase, involves using energy gathered during the G1 Interphase to replicate all of the cell's DNA.

    G2 Interphase

    • The G2 interphase again involves growth and the gathering of energy molecules.

    M Phase

    • The M phase, or mitosis phase, involves splitting the cell's contents into two new cells. During prophase, the first stage of mitosis, the genetic material of the cell condenses. Next, during metaphase, the membranes around the chromosomes dissolve and the chromasomes align themselves along the cell's equator. During anaphase, the chromosomes are pulled to opposite poles of the cell. Finally, during telophase, two new nuclear membranes reform around the chromasomes.

    Cytokinesis

    • The final stage of the cell cycle is cytokinesis, the process by which the remaining contents of the cell divide in half and the two new daughter cells split apart from each other.
