Why Is My System Idle Process So High?

Why Is My System Idle Process So High? thumbnail
The Windows Task Manager monitors how much of the processor each task is using.

The Windows Task Manager, among other things, tracks how much of the processor different programs use. The "System Idle Process" listed with all the other running processes is a bit special, however.

  1. System Idle Process

    • The "System Idle Process" measures how much of the processor time is unused. If there is little activity on the computer, the "System Idle Process" will have a high percentage.

    Processor Usage

    • The Windows Task Manager displays the percentage of processor time each process is using. Each process is given a portion of the processor depending on its needs and priority. Any processor time left over from all the running processes is displayed as the "System Idle Process."

    Misconceptions

    • Many people believe that the "System Idle Process" is actually using the processor and become alarmed when it takes up a large percentage of the processor time when, in fact, the computer is actually at rest. This is normal, and does not signal a problem.
