What Does "Triple Twine" Mean?

Triple twine is used in basket weaving.

Evidence of early basket weaving is found in Egyptian pyramids and is still part of Native American culture. It is believed baskets were used to store everything from clothing to food. Basket weaving is an art passed from generation to generation, with techniques such as triple twine used to add strength, interest and texture.

Triple Twine

Triple twine is also known as three rod wale. It involves a braiding technique that incorporates five separate chords. The chords are woven in a specific pattern and the end result is twine that resembles braided rope.

Triple-Twine Baskets

Baskets that use the triple-twine method are most commonly found in Native American culture. These baskets had multiple uses and were made from materials readily available. Nomadic tribes, such as the Apache, paid little attention to the use of color and pattern, as their baskets were utilitarian. Tribes that moved little, like the Hopi and Pima, created baskets as works of art that are used to this day.

Art of Basket Weaving

Native American tribes still make and sell their baskets, and the art of basket weaving is still being taught. There are many resources for those not affiliated with any tribe to learn the craft and re-create the most popular patterns using the triple-twine technique.
