Over 3 million child abuse reports are filed each year.

Although the majority of child abuse reports are well intended, there are incidents where a false report is deliberately flied. In Wisconsin, penalties for making a false child abuse report include fines and jail time.

  1. Reporting System

    • The Child Abuse and Neglect Program in Wisconsin aims to, "protect the health, safety and welfare of children by encouraging reporting of suspected abuse and neglect," according to the Wisconsin Department of Children and Families. Certain professionals, including doctors, nurses and teachers, are required by law to report suspected cases of child maltreatment. However, the law also allows any concerned individual to make a report as well.

    Monetary Fine

    • If you are found guilty of deliberately making a false report of child abuse or neglect to Wisconsin Family Services, you might face a monetary fine. The amount of the fine can be up to $1,000.

    Jail Time

    • According to Wisconsin law, you could receive up to six months in jail as a result of filing a false child abuse or neglect report. This could be in addition to, or instead of, a fine.
