Gmail limits email attachments to 25 MB.

Sending large files over the Internet can seem tricky since most email services impose an upper limit on the size of attachments. However, there are solutions to the problem of large file transfers that do not involve special software such as FTP clients.

  1. File Transfer Service

    • Choose an Internet-based file transfer service. These types of vendors are quite plentiful online. Many offer an option to send files for free. Examples of these services include DropSend, which will allow the transfer of files of up to 2 GB, and SendThisFile, which does not impose an upper limit on the size of files, but acknowledges that the allowable amount in the transfer may be limited to 2 GB by the browser.

    Upload the File

    • Complete the necessary steps to send the attachment through the chosen service. This may include registering for a free account or simply uploading the file to the file transfer vendor's server. Note the location of the file online--this will be provided in your browser or through your email. Also bear in mind that the online storage of your file is temporary, and therefore, sending it to another individual will require a timely execution of Step 3.

    Forward File Link

    • Email a link of the file download to your intended recipient. Be sure to explain that the file storage is temporary and that she must download it within 3 to 7 days (this depends on the storage time provided by the service).
