Asbestos is known to cause cancer in humans. Asbestos fibers enter your lungs, where they tend to stay, causing scarring of the lung tissue. People exposed to asbestos have an increased chance of developing lung cancer, mesothelioma (cancer of the abdominal lining and chest cavity) and asbestosis (severe scarring of the lungs).

Your health is the most at risk if you inhale asbestos fibers over a long period of time. The Environmental Protection Agency recommends leaving asbestos tiles in your home alone if they are in good condition. Do not scrape, sand or wax them with abrasive brushes as these activities may release fibers into the air.

If you do want to remove your asbestos tiles, or if they become damaged and must be removed, hire a professional who specializes in asbestos removal. Stay away from the site while the work is performed. After tile removal, do not sweep or dust the area. Use a wet mop or a high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) vacuum, which prevent fibers from getting into the air.
