What Is the Main Chip in a Computer?
The main chip in a computer is the CPU, or central processing unit. The CPU is the control center or "brains" of a computer and is responsible for taking input data and processing it, via complex circuitry, to produce output.

Functions
-
The functions of a CPU can essentially be divided into five stages. The CPU reads, or "fetches," an instruction from memory, interprets the instructions, fetches any data required from memory or an I/O module, processes the data, and writes the result to memory or an I/O module.
CPU Speed
-
CPU speed is typically quoted in million of cycles, megahertz, or thousands of millions of cycles, gigahertz, per second. The quoted speed indicates the number of clock cycles per second, but does not necessarily indicate how much is being done in each cycle.

Types of CPU
-
Intel and AMD have dominated the CPU market in recent years, and 64-bit processors such as the Intel Core 2 Duo Processor and the AMD Phenom II series have become the norm for computer users all over the world.
