Function

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, security officers "patrol and inspect property to protect against fire, theft, vandalism, terrorism and illegal activity." Security guards either patrol property with the general public present in order to prevent crimes from occurring among the masses, or defend an area that is off limits to the public.

Types

The importance of the security officer depends on the importance of the area secured. In many school systems security officers are crucial to protect students, while guards working for the government are usually the first line of defense for top chiefs and executives. In areas where the police cannot always be present, security officers maintain and ensure safety.

Prevention/Solution

Technology has assisted security officers in the recent era. Closed-circuit TV cameras and alarm systems help notify all surrounding security of problems, while impenetrable safes and intricate safety lock devices help security guards prevent theft and vandalism. Without the help of technology and security officers, it would be much more difficult for companies to maintain stability.
