Unit 7 is a popular draw for elk hunters.

Autumn means hunting season in Wyoming. Unit 7 is a particularly popular area for elk hunters and consistently receives the most applications for permits among residents and nonresidents.

  1. Location

    • Unit 7 is located in southeastern Wyoming near Laramie Peak. It is just west of Wheatland, Wyoming, and southeast of Casper, Wyoming.

    Permit Success

    • Unit 7 is the most popular area for hunting for nonresidents. In 2010, 1257 people applied for 33 available "any elk" permits. Among Wyoming residents, 3,823 people applied for 1276 available "any elk" permits.

    Hunt Success

    • Public lands in this unit are overrun by hunters during elk season. Hunters may have more luck seeking permission to hunt private lands or using an outfitter.

    Season

    • Archery season in unit 7 runs from September 1 through September 30. The gun season for permit holders for "any elk" runs from October 15 through November 20.

    License Fees

    • Permit fees differ depending on the type of permit purchased. For nonresidents, the license fee is $577 for any elk or $288 for a cow or calf. For residents, the license fee for any elk is $52 and the fee for a cow or calf is $43.
