South Dakota Family Pheasant Hunting
The ideal habitat of South Dakota contributes to a flourishing pheasant population in the state. South Dakota's pheasant season opens annually during mid-October for families seeking that next hunting adventure.
-
Public vs. Private Hunting Land
-
Although much of South Dakota's hunting land is privately owned, according to the South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks, there are more than one million acres of public hunting land--also known as Walk-In Areas--available for you and your family to pheasant hunt in South Dakota. The Game, Fish and Parks department offers the convenience of locating such Walk-In Areas by downloading specific maps to your GPS.
Youth Hunting
-
South Dakota presents an opportunity for youth, between the ages of 12 and 17, to pheasant hunt prior to the regular season opening. The added youth season starts around the first week of October each year.

Considerations
-
Residents of South Dakota, as well as nonresidents visiting the state to hunt, are required to purchase a small game license prior to pheasant hunting. The pheasant limit is set at three roosters per hunting day.
