What is the Difference Between 2-Cycle Oil & Motor Oil?

Two-cycle motor oil and regular motor oil are used in different types of engines. Two-cycle oil is used in two-stroke engines, while motor oil is used in four-stroke engines.

  1. Two-cycle oil

    • Because two-stroke engines do not have a devoted lubrication system, two-cycle oil must be mixed with the gasoline, lubricating the engine as it uses the fuel.

    Motor Oil

    • Motor oil is stored in a separate reservoir from gasoline in a four-stroke engine. An oil pump transfers the oil from the reservoir to the engine for the necessary lubrication.

    Uses

    • Two-cycle motor oil is generally used with lawn equipment that has two-stroke engines. Lawnmowers, weed-cutters and chainsaws typically have two-stroke engines. Some vehicles also use two-stroke engines, especially off-road recreational vehicles. Standard motor oil is used in traditional motor vehicles.
