Acupuncture Treatment

Acupuncture involves unblocking energy flow with long needles.

Part of traditional Chinese medicine, acupuncture has been around for thousands of years. This ancient form of treatment involves stimulating certain points of the body using long, thin needles, according to Mayoclinic.com.

  1. Benefits

    • Acupuncture can provide pain relief. It also may relieve nausea and vomiting due to chemotherapy, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC). Other medical conditions treated with acupuncture include carpal tunnel syndrome, constipation, lower back pain, menstrual cramps, sinusitis and urinary incontinence.

    Chinese Theory

    • Traditional Chinese theory speculates that acupuncture balances the energy flow (qi or chi) through pathways called meridians, which are located throughout the body. When these pathways become blocked, disease or pain may occur. The insertion of needles along the meridian improves that flow of energy, unblocking chi.

    Western Theory

    • Western medicine, on the other hand, speculates that acupuncture stimulates the nerves and tissue. This encourages the body to increase blood flow and release its own painkillers.

    Side Effects

    • According to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM), acupuncture is relatively free of complications. Some complications may occur, however, if needles aren't properly sterilized. The NCCAM adds that adverse reactions can happen if the acupuncturist does not properly insert the needles.

    Considerations

    • People should choose a licensed acupuncturist to perform acupuncture, according to UMMC. Look for licensed acupuncturists that have the "LAc" title.
